The Growth of Nine Dragons
By the mid-1990s, the demand for high quality packaging material in China was
growing and domestic production was not able to meet the demand. Chinese
manufacturers had to depend on imported material.
This prompted Zhang to consider setting up a plant to produce high quality
packaging material in China.
In 1995, Zhang incorporated the Nine Dragons Paper Industries Company in
Dongguan, Guangdong province, China, with her husband and her brother Zhang
Cheng Fei (Cheng Fei). Within two years, Zhang expanded her business into
production of cardboards to cater to the growing demand...

Secrets of Success
Several factors contributed to Zhang's rise and her success in business.
Commenting on her success, Zhang said, "Forecasting the market ahead of our
competitors… is what made us into the market leader." She was always ahead
of the competition. She said, "While most domestic producers were using
machines with a production capacity of less than 50,000 tons, our first
machine had a capacity of 200,000 tons. We have higher goals."...

The Road Ahead
Nine Dragons posted an increase of 450% in its net income for the year
ending June 2006, in a span of one year. The net income grew from RMB 303.7
million in June 2005 to RMB 1374.8 million in June 2006. The demand for
cardboard in China was projected to reach 34 million tons by 2010,
accounting for 24% of the total global demand, from 21 million tons per
annum (18% of the global demand) in 2006. Analysts opined that Nine Dragons
stood to gain from the growing demand, as it was among the well-established
cardboard manufacturers... |
